Couples seeking an indulgent, romantic getaway to make their Valentine's Day special don't need to dig out their passports.

Their destination can be just down the road, in the heart of Berks County.

Bell Tower Salon Spa, Wyomissing, and The Spa at Spring Ridge, Spring Township, each have put together an enticing package of services that a couple can enjoy together.

Relaxation and romance, complemented with plenty of pampering; what could be better?

The settings are lovely as well. Both spas boast beautiful, tranquil decor and top-notch facilities, with services delivered by highly skilled and certified personnel dedicated to making the experience memorable, rejuvenating and de-stressing.

Heather Pellegrini, operations director at the Bell Tower Salon Spa, underscored the benefits of its Couples Escape, which is always on its menu of services but ideal for Valentine's Day.

"It includes a classic massage," Pellegrini said, "followed by an infrared sauna treatment, which has benefits such as assisting with weight loss, detoxifying the body and pain relief.

"Afterward, the couple gets some relax time, with fruit, cheese and champagne."

Kathy Hawk, spa manager of the Spa at Spring Ridge, emphasized the importance of setting some time apart to enjoy uninterrupted time together.

"I think that so much of our time is consumed with work, family and everyday life that we oftentimes forget to take a timeout for ourselves," she said, "and that same thing pertains to one's significant other."

The Spa at Spring Ridge also combines a glass of bubbly with massage, and a time for the couple to sit and simply be together free of stress and pressure.

"Specifically for Valentine's Day, we offer Relax Together, our Sweet Escape Package, which includes a one-hour couples massage and champagne for two plus, for her, a free spa robe," Hawk said.

"We have a wonderful relaxation area where our couple is taken after they are change into a spa robe and spa sandals," she said. "It's a great place, where they can meet and discuss their experience, sip their champagne and unwind."

Pellegrini pointed out that the Bell Tower will take any massage on the menu and turn it into a couples experience, for an extra fee above the menu price, and that the spa can also add fruit and cheese to any service.

"I would recommend our seasonal massage, for the spring," she said. "This will be available starting Valentine's Day."

The seasonal massage will feature raspberry-peach Bellini, based on a Prosecco drink popular in 1940s.

"We have custom-made scrubs and body butters with the raspberry-peach aroma," she said, "and the client will get a raspberry-peach Bellini and raspberry macaroon afterward."

Because Valentine's Day is a busy time for couples, Hawk said, booking an escape sooner rather than later is a must.

"That is why it's important to set that time aside to enjoy each other's company and not just quick chitchat in passing between work functions, meetings, kids' sports games, etc."

Make the most out of the experience

You've put the couples spa experience on your to-do list.

Now take the time to ensure you and your significant other get the most from it.

Here's some advice from the spa professionals:

Kathy Hawk, spa manager, The Spa at Spring Ridge:

  • Know what areas you may want the service provider to focus on, whether it be for a body massage or facial, so you get customized service suited specifically for you.
  • Utilize the amenities that we have, such as the shower and relaxation area.
  • It's important for all couples to be comfortable and make sure they voice any preference they want with their service provider.
  • Know your availability before scheduling.

Heather Pellegrini, operations director, Bell Tower Salon Spa:

  • Come in comfortable clothing, so changing in and out of the robe will be easy. The spa provides robe and slippers.
  • Avoid alcohol before the massage.
  • After the experience, continue drinking lots of water throughout the rest of the day.
  • Ask what you should wear and when to arrive.
  • Couples should ask themselves whether they are able to relax during a shared salon experience. If somebody has not had a massage, he or she may not know that it can be a physical and emotional release.
